ICE Deports Paola Yarberry
Staff Reports
The Douglas News
DOUGLAS — Paola Yarberry has been deported from the United States.
Yarberry, 21, had been in the custody of Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) for over 11 months. Most of her confinement had been
served in the Etowah County Detention Center in Gadsden, Ala.
Yarberry was arrested in Douglas last May on an immigration violation
and had been in custody ever since.
On Feb. 1, Judge William Cassidy denied her petition for citizenship
filed by her attorneys. In the hearing, Yarberry offered no other claims
for her defense and she didn't refute any of the government's
allegations.
Her attorneys had until March 3 to appeal the ruling. The date came and
went without an appeal. At the hearing, Judge Cassidy said that if
deported, Yarberry would be taken to her point of entry, which was
Miami, and she could go to any country that would take her. She is a
native of Venezuela, but did not necessarily have to return to that
country.
Sources tell The Douglas News that Yarberry did in fact return to
Venezuela. The Executive Office of Immigration Review did not have any
information on Yarberry's deportation, and calls to the Department of
Homeland Security were not immediately returned.
In 1999, Yarberry was classified as an arriving alien. For several
years, she had been working on having her immigration status resolved.
Yarberry was the only other person inside Jon's Sports Park when Doris
Worrell was tragically killed on Sept. 20, 2006. Court documents show
that Yarberry was questioned about the Worrell shooting when ICE picked
her up in May. The documents also say that Yarberry stated she may know
about the shooting than originally thought.
However, during her incarceration, she did not come forward with any new
information about the case.
On Thursday, March 13, conspiracy to commit murder warrants were issued
for Glidden Humberto Rodriguez, 39, and Brandon Eugene Cage, 20, both of
Douglas, in reference to the homicide of Doris Worrell. Both remain in
custody and no other arrests have been made. The investigation into the
shooting is ongoing.
