Police: 2 Conspired in Slaying of Westfield Grad
By Becky Purser - bpurser@macon.com
Two arrests have been made in connection with the 2006
slaying in Coffee County of a graduate of The Westfield Schools in
Perry, a GBI agent said Tuesday.
Glidden Humberto Rodriguez, 39, and Brandon Eugene Cage, 20, both of
Douglas, were being held in the Coffee County jail on charges of
conspiracy to commit murder in the shooting of Doris Spillers Worrell,
said Russell Mansfield, special agent in charge of the GBI office in
Douglas.
On Sept. 20, 2006, Worrell's body was discovered by her husband, Jon, at
the sports/amusement park the family owned in Douglas, about 70 miles
northeast of Valdosta. The 39-year-old mother of three died of a single
gunshot wound about 11:15 a.m. She had been doing some cleaning at the
park, which was closed.
Rodriguez and Cage are current employees of the park, which has been
renamed The Fun Place, Mansfield said, and Rodriguez was employed at the
business, which was known as Jon's Sports Park at the time of the
killing.
The GBI agent declined to release any details about the suspects'
connection to the slaying, except to say that conspiracy is when someone
conspires and discusses with another the carrying out of a crime.
"It's not the actual crime itself. They are not being charged with
murder," Mansfield said.
He declined comment when asked about a possible motive for the slaying,
nor would he release other details of the crime.
"It's been a very sensitive case," Mansfield said. "It's very high
profile in that this was a good Christian lady who went to church and
raised her family.
"It was ... a shock to the community when it happened and we're doing
our best to bring this case to a close and we're trying not to do
anything that will jeopardize this investigation."
Worrell was a cheerleader and graduated with honors in 1985 from The
Westfield Schools. Many of her family and friends live in the Middle
Georgia area. Jon Worrell and the children have moved to Florida since
the murder.
"I've very pleased" with the arrests, said her sister, Le Ann Tuggle,
who lives in Perry. "It's been a very tough 18 months and I feel like
this may be the break we've been looking for. We are all anxious for
closures in this case."
Tuggle said the family has been buoyed by community support.
"I never dreamed I'd be faced with something like this," she said.
"People have just been so kind and supported us with prayer ... and in
so many ways."
Anyone who has any information that may be helpful in the investigation
is asked to contact the Coffee County sheriff's office at (912) 384-4227
or the GBI's Douglas office at (912) 389-4103.
