Arrests Made in Murder Case
03/19/08

By CHARLOTTE PERKINS

Two arrests have been made related to the murder of Doris Annette Spillers Worrell, which took place in 2006 in Coffee County.

Worrell was well known in this area. She was from Fort Valley and a graduate of Westfield High School. Her sister, LeAnn Tuggle and her mother, Beth Spillers, live in Perry.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Glidden Humberto Rodriguez, 39, and Brandon Eugene Cage, 20, both of Douglas, on March 13. They are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and remain in jail.

According to a release issued on Monday, the arrests were the result of an ongoing investigation conducted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI after Doris Worrell was shot and killed at Jon’s Sports Park.

At the time of the murder, according to the release, Rodriguez was employed at Jon’s Sports Park.

However, the investigation is still under way.

Worrell was found dead inside Jon’s Sports Park by her husband Jon that morning at approximately 11:15 a.m. The park which includes, miniature golf, go-carts, a driving range, arcade and skating rink, is owned by Jon Worrell and has since been renamed the Fun Place.

The park was closed at the time of the shooting, according to published reports. Coffee County Sheriff Jerry Pope said that afternoon that Doris Worrell may have been in the park restocking while it was closed.

GBI Agent Russell Mansfield said the case has really taken a toll on the Douglas community and this area too, as Worrell has family and friends in Perry and Fort Valley.

“A case like this,” Russell said, “where an innocent person is killed – not doing anything wrong, just at work – is really a shock to the community.”

Family and friends and a memorial web page for Worrell, called Friends of Doris, which has photos and memories, has been set up. It is at friendsofdoris.com and pictures and memories can be submitted to friends@friendsofdoris.com.

Gov. Sonny Perdue issued an executive order offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to identification, arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the murder.

The GBI asks that anyone with knowledge of the events that occurred that day to come forward and contact them at 912-389-4103.
