The Douglas News Still No Ruling Issued in Yarberry Bond Hearing
Staff Reports DOUGLAS — Judge William A. Cassidy, who presiding over the bond hearing for Paola Yarberry of Douglas, has yet to render a verdict. And according to a spokesperson with the Executive Office of Immigration Review, there isn't even a follow-up hearing scheduled. Yarberry, who is originally from Venezuela, was picked up May 2 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on an alleged immigration violation at Hanna's Cafe in Douglas. After being transported first to Savannah and then to Charleston, S.C., Yarberry was given a bond hearing Thursday, May 10 in Atlanta. At the hearing, Judge Cassidy stated that another agency is interested in Yarberry's case — though he did not specify which agency — and there are other issues in the case as well. There is also the issue of Yarberry's possible adoption by a family member who lived in Coffee County. A family member filed adoption papers for Yarberry several years ago. However, those adoption papers may have been fraudulent. Judge Cassidy seemed to recognize this as a factor in the hearing last Thursday, and requested more information regarding the alleged adoption. For the last several years, Yarberry has been living with the Jon Worrell family of Douglas, and she was inside Jon's Sports Park on the morning of Sept. 20, 2006 when Doris Worrell was tragically shot and killed. The Jon Worrell family attended Yarberry's bond hearing in Atlanta. This past Thursday, the Douglas News contacted Yarberry's attorney, who specializes in immigration law. He declined comment on the case.
