arrest made
Staff Reports
Douglas Daily News
DOUGLAS — Authorities investigating the shooting death of 39-year-old
Doris Worrell remained tight-lipped Friday, saying that no arrests had
yet been made but declining further comment.
GBI officials said that because the investigation was still active they
could and would not comment on potential suspects or a motive for the
crime.
Rumors of an arrest ran rampant Friday afternoon, but GBI Assistant
Special Agent in Charge Scott Whitley said that no arrest had been made
and that once one had been made an announcement would be made quickly.
A joint statement issued Thursday by the GBI and Coffee County Sheriff’s
Office contains the only information released by authorities since the
shooting on Wednesday morning. That statement places the time of the
shooting between 9:40 and 11:15 a.m.
The statement said that Doris Worrell and her husband Jon were inside
cleaning Jon’s
Sports
Park
that morning. At approximately 9:40 that morning, Jon Worrell left the
sports park to run some errands, while his wife remained on the premises
to continue cleaning. When he returned at approximately
11:15 a.m.,
he found his wife shot. Officers responded to a 911 call at
approximately
11:17 a.m.,
and had the scene surrounded and secure shortly afterwards.
On Thursday,
Coffee County sheriff’s deputies set up traffic checkpoints at the
intersection of Thompson Drive and Bowens Mill Road and at the
intersection of Simmons Drive and Highway 158 West. According to
sheriff’s department officials, the checkpoints were places for
investigative purposes.
Authorities are
encouraging anyone with information concerning the investigation to call
the GBI’s Douglas office at 912-389-4103 or the Coffee County Sheriff’s
Office at 912-384-4227.
