DOUGLAS — Worrell
fatally shot at park
Staff Reports
DOUGLAS — Doris Worrell, the wife of Jon’s Sports Park owner Jon
Worrell, was found dead inside the park by her husband Wednesday
morning, killed by a gunshot wound.
According to a statement released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation
and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, Worrell found his wife at
approximately 11:15 a.m. By 11:30, the park, located on Thompson Drive
just off the Bowens Mill Road, was completely surrounded by law
enforcement officers and GBI agents had arrived on the scene to take
over the investigation.
A calendar posted at the front gate indicated that the park had been
closed Wednesday at the time of the shooting, and, speaking to media
late Wednesday afternoon, Coffee County Sheriff Jerry Pope said that she
may have been in the park restocking while it was closed.
Pope said that he believed the 39-year-old victim was alone inside the
park when the shooting occurred, but that he couldn’t comment on a
possible motive for the shooting or whether or not law enforcement had a
description of the possible suspect.
He did say that law enforcement was still in the initial stages of the
investigation and that they wouldn’t be able to release further
information Wednesday.
“[The GBI] hasn’t
released any information at all yet, other than that she died from a
gunshot wound to the head,” he told media gathered outside the park
Wednesday evening.
“We’re looking in
every corner of the county trying to find out what’s going on.”
